PHILOSOPHY & SPEAKING TOPICS
My experience makes me uniquely qualified to treat the people who are in constant pain and who are addicts because of it.
Twenty-three years ago, I was an IV drug-using doctor—an addict who happened to be bright and resilient enough to succeed in practicing medicine before finally being struck down by my disease.
I am the doctor who listens to his patients. I help people find solutions and partner with them to take responsibility for their recovery and to live their new life. People are not one-dimensional and neither is their pain. You’re a whole person and should be treated like one.
Over 116 million Americans suffer from chronic pain and feel unheard because healthcare providers are overwhelmed with patients. In turn, a patient feels more despair and thus more pain. Patients often find themselves taking more medication in order to cope, and some patients find themselves dependent on addictive medications that were helping at first, but now are only a roller coaster of numbness, pain, and fear.
I want to educate the world, in which the majority still believes addiction and alcoholism to be a disease of the weak-willed. I want to teach those still unaware that there is scientific, neurobiological basis for the insane behavior addicts and alcoholics exhibit.
If society wishes to decrease the amount of active alcoholics and addicts, the solution first must come with education. If society doesn’t understand what the problem is, then there is no hope for a solution.
We must treat the cause of a disease, not just the symptoms, if we are ever to hope for a cure. It’s time to wake up and take off the veil of prejudice that keeps us from seeing the problem and moving towards a solution.
And for those suffering from the disease of addiction and alcoholism, I tell you there is hope. There is a better way to live life.
I’m super-specialized in what I do. I treat addiction and chronic pain and I perform anesthesia.
I always knew I was going to be a doctor, but I can help so many more people by speaking.
